Reportedly Delayed: Destiny 2’s Final Shape

In 2022, Bungie entered a partnership with PlayStation Studios in a deal worth approximately $3.6 billion. Since then, the renowned gaming studio has been diligently working on their upcoming player-versus-player (PvP) game titled “Matter,” as well as the highly anticipated conclusion to Destiny 2’s epic Light V Dark story arc known as “The Final Shape” expansion.

Regrettably, fans of Destiny 2 will have to wait a bit longer for the final installment of this saga, as The Final Shape has encountered a substantial delay, and this setback coincides with a challenging period for Bungie as they, like several other game development companies, have been forced to reduce their workforce.

According to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, Bungie made the difficult decision to lay off an undisclosed number of employees. In an effort to provide transparency and address the situation, an all-hands meeting was held by Bungie’s management. Although there has been no official confirmation from either Sony or Bungie regarding these developments as of the time this article was published, the report also suggests that the release date for Destiny 2: The Final Shape has been postponed from February 2024 to June of the same year.

This significant delay for The Final Shape is undoubtedly disappointing news for fans, as it necessitates Bungie’s efforts to extend existing seasonal content or devise a less ambitious interim season to keep players engaged. Furthermore, the setback also impacts “Matter,” which was originally slated for a 2024 release but has now been pushed back to 2025.
