Microsoft to launch Disc-less Xbox Series X Digital Edition
Microsoft is set to launch a new version of its high-end Xbox Series X console this holiday season. Named the “Digital Edition,” this model will come without a disc drive, reflecting the industry’s shift towards digital gaming. However, Microsoft reassures fans that disc-based gaming will continue to be supported.
The Digital Edition Xbox Series X boasts 1 TB of storage and a sleek “Robot White” design, similar to the Xbox Series S. Priced at $449 (€499.99), it offers a more affordable option for gamers who prefer digital downloads over physical media. This model is $50 cheaper than the standard Xbox Series X, which includes a disc drive.
Rumours about a disc-less Xbox Series X surfaced last September during the FTC’s investigation into the Microsoft/Activision merger. Early leaks hinted at a “Brooklin” refresh with a cylindrical design and improved power efficiency. However, the final design of the Digital Edition differs significantly. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer noted that much has changed since the older leaks.
Despite introducing the Digital Edition, Microsoft is not abandoning disc-based gaming. A new “Galaxy Black” Xbox Series X with a disc drive and 2 TB of storage will also be available this holiday season, priced at $600. This offers a cost-effective alternative to buying a standard Xbox Series X with additional 1 TB of expansion storage, which typically costs around $150.
Microsoft is also expanding its Xbox Series S lineup with a 1 TB edition in “Robot White,” complementing the “Carbon Black” version released last September. Both variants will be available for $349, offering more choices in storage and aesthetics.
